Documenting the Pandemic

Taken April 17, 2020- not the toilet paper section of the store, but the pasta shelves.

Teddy bears appear in windows and all kinds of different places. Children and adults can go around spotting them as something to do during the pandemic.

My socially distanced neighbors are doing what they can do during this time, getting outside for a walk.

Masks are essential and can be a fashion accessory or make a statement.

Bar Mitzvahs and other family celebrations are very small and like this one, are held outdoors with most guests attending via Zoom.

Haircuts are not available until later in the year. Everyone gets a little shaggy or they learn how to do it themselves.

My church, Hope Church, moves its services outside to a member's home, when we are able to meet in person again.

We move back inside in the fall but also stream online. Attendance is sparse in person.

Restaurants have to adapt and many are open only for takeout and delivery. Sadly, many close down completely.

Sharon High School's graduation is very different. Cars line up at the train station in a "car parade" to drive to the high school to graduate one at a time and drive on.

School is online and my son-in-law and grandson are guest speakers for an online  session with an elementary class.

The train station is empty. On this evening, the train stopped and no one got on or off.
Picture
This is my neighborhood after a fall wind storm.  We live very close to the train station. Normally with the high level of traffic coming to and from the train station, these leaves would have been blown aside, but they blanked the road all day until the wind started up again.
Picture
Because the streets were so empty, it was easy for me to set up some long exposure shots in in May. Very few cars were out.
Picture
There was no trick-or- treating, but there was a very imaginative and well done "trunk-or treat" event organized by the town Rec. Department. Families stayed in their cars and drove though the displays made by various groups or individuals They collected a bag of treats at the end.

I know you we are all still experiencing the pandemic, but I felt compelled to do this blog post to be able to look back at it in the future. Photography is so important for documenting life.

What Is Lifestyle Photography?

What is lifestyle photography? According to Wikipedia it is "A kind of photography which mainly aims to capture portrait/people in situations, real-life events or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday. The primary goal is to tell stories about people's life or to inspire people in different times." It goes on to say a bit more, but all I know is, I LOVE IT!

Last year I jokingly blogged about wanting to be a "Vacation Creeper", someone you take on your vacation to just take your pictures.  I couldn't get the idea out of my head and spent a lot of time thinking
about really doing this. One day I said to myself, I am going to do this. So the Google search began for some ideas. I guess I live under a photographers rock because I found out that people already do this. Who knew?  Maybe they don't go on the whole vacation, but you can book them for just a day or several hours. Sessions can be just during a non vacation regular day, too. If you know me, once I get an idea in my head, I am going to make it happen.

Last week during school vacation, I did my first session. I was to spend the day with Lisa K. and her three beautiful girls. They had plans to go to the Butterfly Place in Westward, MA.  Mom said, "What could be better, three girls and butterflies?"  I was beyond excited to spend the day with them.
Picture
They were just as excited to see me when I arrived at there house. There is nothing cuter than kids in their pajamas!
Picture
We raced upstairs to go see the girl's bedroom. They showed me some of their special things and we read books together.

You never know what will happen in an ordinary day. I hope this session will always bring back great memories for Lisa and her daughters to share. Thanks you girls for letting me be part of your memories.

This was a wonderful trip, and having Ann-Marie along with us made it all the more exciting. She has a great energy and was able to pick up the subtle but important moments of our time together.

Life can be so hectic, and days can run into one another so easily. One of the things I like about being part of this Lifestyle Photofraphy session is that this beautiful day, which otherwise may have ended up as part of the blur of a busy life, will be here for my girls and I to back on.

If you have a day, a weekend, or a few hours to spend with your family, take it. If you want to remember it and re-live it, bring a photographer along. I think you all know who I would recommend. Thanks, Ann-Marie!
