What do I wear For My Senior Portrait Session?

What to Wear for Your Portrait Session
Portraits that truly reflect who you are start with clothing you feel comfortable and confident in. You don’t need to “dress up” unless you want to — what matters most is that you feel like yourself.
Simple, classic clothing tends to photograph best. Solid or semi-solid colors help keep the focus on your face and ensure your photos stay timeless. Bringing two or three outfit options gives us flexibility to create different looks throughout your session.
Tips for Choosing Outfits:
  • Stick with solid or semi-solid colors that coordinate well together.
  • Darker shades can be flattering and tend to slim in photos.
  • Light colors can work beautifully when layered under a dark jacket or sweater.
What to Avoid:
  • Busy patterns, neon colors, and logos that draw attention away from you.
  • Flesh-tone or very light colors like white, beige, tan, pale peach, or light pink on their own — these can sometimes wash out your natural skin tones.
A Few Final Notes:
  • Make sure your clothing is clean, pressed, and free of wrinkles.
  • Don’t feel limited by these suggestions — if you have a favorite shirt or outfit that you love, bring it! We’re always happy to work it into your session.

What Should Guys Wear?
The most important thing is to wear what you feel comfortable and confident in. If jeans, a T-shirt, polo, or sneakers are your go-to, then wear them — your portraits should reflect you.
If you know certain colors make your eyes pop or complement your skin tone, that’s a great place to start when choosing outfits.
Want to include a few looks that feel a bit more polished or classic? A collared shirt or sweater layered over a solid-colored tee paired with khakis or nice jeans is always a good option.

Girls

Solid colors or small patterns work best. Casual outfits with jeans are great as are more dressy ones for a different look.

I also suggest girls wear a cammie so you can change outfits on location if needed.

Light flowy dresses that catch the breeze are an option. They are fun to twirl in, too.

Wear colors that make your eyes pop.
Blue Eyes -try shades of pink, deep blues, and lighter greens.
Green Eyes try purple, deep greens, and pale yellows.
Green Eyes try purple, deep greens, and pale yellows.
Brown Eyes try khaki greens, bright blue, and gold.

Try on your outfits to make sure everything fits you and you feel comfortable in them. Make sure your bra straps aren’t showing with any of your chosen tops.

Make It Personal: Props for Your Senior Session
Your senior portraits should reflect who you are at this exciting point in your life — your personality, passions, and what makes you unique.
Bringing a few meaningful items to your session can help tell your story in a fun and authentic way. Think about the things you love, the activities you're involved in, or your future goals. These personal touches can add depth and variety to your portraits.
Here are some ideas to inspire you:
  • Sports gear or uniforms — Whether it's a jersey, ball, or letterman jacket, it’s a great way to showcase your dedication.
  • Instruments — If music is a big part of your life, bring along your guitar, violin, or even drumsticks.
  • Art supplies or a sketchbook — A beautiful way to reflect your creativity.
  • Books, journals, or tech — Something that represents your academic side or future plans.
  • Your pet — They’re part of your story, too!
  • College gear — A sweatshirt or flag from where you’re headed next can be a fun addition.
  • Hobby-related items — Whether you love hiking, baking, photography, or gaming, we can find a creative way to include it.
You don’t need to overthink it — even one small item can say a lot about who you are. And don’t worry, we’ll work it into the session naturally and make sure it feels fun and authentic.
