Documenting the Pandemic

Picture
Taken April 17, 2020- not the toilet paper section of the store, but the pasta shelves.

Picture
Teddy bears appear in windows and all kinds of different places. Children and adults can go around spotting them as something to do during the pandemic.

Picture
My socially distanced neighbors are doing what they can do during this time, getting outside for a walk.
Picture

The computer is essential for spending time with family and friends in April.

Picture
Masks are essential and can be a fashion accessory or make a statement.
Picture
Sharon PD does their part in helping kids cope by offering bicycle safety programs.
Picture
Bar Mitzvahs and other family celebrations are very small and like this one, are held outdoors with most guests attending via Zoom.
Picture

Haircuts are not available until later in the year. Everyone gets a little shaggy or they learn how to do it themselves.
Picture
My church, Hope Church, moves its services outside to a member's home, when we are able to meet in person again.
Picture

We move back inside in the fall but also stream online. Attendance is sparse in person.
Picture
Restaurants have to adapt and many are open only for takeout and delivery. Sadly, many close down completely.
Picture
Sharon High School's graduation is very different. Cars line up at the train station in a "car parade" to drive to the high school to graduate one at a time and drive on.
Picture
Picture
Marlene Chused retires as town clerk with another car parade wishing he well. No retirement party could be held.
Picture
Picture
School is online and my son-in-law and grandson are guest speakers for an online  session with an elementary class.
Picture
The train station is empty. On this evening, the train stopped and no one got on or off.
Picture
This is my neighborhood after a fall wind storm.  We live very close to the train station. Normally with the high level of traffic coming to and from the train station, these leaves would have been blown aside, but they blanked the road all day until the wind started up again.
Picture
Because the streets were so empty, it was easy for me to set up some long exposure shots in in May. Very few cars were out.
Picture
There was no trick-or- treating, but there was a very imaginative and well done "trunk-or treat" event organized by the town Rec. Department. Families stayed in their cars and drove though the displays made by various groups or individuals They collected a bag of treats at the end.

I know you we are all still experiencing the pandemic, but I felt compelled to do this blog post to be able to look back at it in the future. Photography is so important for documenting life.

A Special City Hall Wedding

If you have ever been to Boston City Hall, you know that it is not the most attractive building around. As ugly as it is, on Friday the 13th of this month, it was a very special place for a few people.

Meet Emily, TJ, and their son. They hired me to photograph their  City Hall wedding, The first time I spoke with Emily, I liked her right away. She was so excited about her upcoming marriage, it was infectious.  I had just met her and I was so excited, too.
Picture
Picture
When they stepped out of the elevator to meet me on the 6th floor, I was wowed by how beautiful Emily looked. I told her she looked beautiful.
Quickly TJ agreed, "I know, she does look beautiful! "……. So sweet.
TJ and their son looked pretty handsome, too.

There were several couples waiting before us. This gave me some time to get to know them better.  It was hard for their little guy to wait, understandably, but he was very well behaved. I was so impressed with the staff in the office. They interacted with him so kindly. They offered him candy and even suggested that he could ring the bell if he wanted to. Of course he wanted to, what kid wouldn't want to.
Finally, it was their turn. The very friendly staff ushered us into the office of the Boston City Clerk, Maureen Feeney. She was very apologetic for the wait and instantly made everyone feel welcome. She went over all the paperwork and explained the ceremony. I was so impressed by how warm she was and how she made  them feel as if their wedding was the only marriage ceremony she had preformed. She never made it feel like, let's get this done. She took the time to interact with them personally and made special time for their son.
Picture
Picture
She asked him how old he was. He insisted that he was 3 years old.
Picture
He is actually 4, but he recently turned 4. I love how he is looking at his parents to see if it is okay to take the lollipops that are offered.
Picture
She even let him play with the glass award that was one her desk and ……………...
Picture
…….the antique typewriter.

Let the ceremony begin!
Picture
Picture
I Love the expression on the little guy and on Emily and TJ.
Picture
My favorite part…….
Picture
I love romantic stuff! They are so in love!
Picture
Picture
After the ceremony, Emily said something to the effect of , "Well, that's over with!" Without skipping a beat, TJ replied, "No it's just beginning!" Gotta love this guy!

We head outside for some more photos.

Perfect title "A Special city hall wedding" The warmth of this couples love, shared with their son was so spot on. Some pictures in color and others in black and white, with a story to go with them. AM caught the kindness that followed them through their story on Friday the 13th. Beautifully done.

What a stunning piece of photojournalism this is! It shows what a modern city hall ceremony consists of. And it makes me want to know their back story - especially his.
